What we built

Winches SA supplied the heavy-duty electric cable reelers that manage the power cables feeding underground dewatering pumps at Pan African Resources’ Mogale Tailings Retreatment (MTR) gold plant in Krugersdorp — an R2.5-billion operation processing 800,000 tonnes of tailings a month. The dewatering pumps pull mine water from depth and run continuously, so the cable management had to be right: our motorised reelers wind and unwind heavy power cable under constant tension, with no manual dragging and no kinking. Commissioned in October 2024, ahead of schedule and under budget. Every unit is custom-built to the client’s cable specification and manufactured in-house to ISO 9001:2015.

Why it matters: Continuous underground dewatering depends on cable that pays out and retrieves cleanly, every cycle, in a wet and dusty environment. A cable reeler that kinks or birds-nests stops the pumps — and stopped pumps flood the working level. Winches SA cable management kept the MTR water-extraction circuit running from commissioning.

The reeler keeps constant tension as the cable pays out, so it will not kink or birds-nest mid-run, and the wide-flange drum takes large-diameter power cable without forcing it into tight bends. On a continuous dewatering circuit, that is the difference between running and flooding.

Common questions

Who supplied the cable reelers for the Pan African MTR plant?

Winches SA supplied the heavy-duty electric cable reelers for Pan African Resources’ Mogale Tailings Retreatment (MTR) plant in Krugersdorp. The reelers manage the power cables feeding the underground dewatering pumps and were commissioned in October 2024, ahead of schedule and under budget.

What is an electric cable reeler used for?

An electric cable reeler winds and unwinds heavy power cable under motor drive and constant tension, so long, heavy cables deploy and retrieve without manual dragging, kinking or birds-nesting. Winches SA cable reelers are used for mine dewatering pump supply, tailings plant pump cabling, mobile equipment power, and conveyor and stacker cable systems.

Can Winches SA build a cable reeler to a specific cable size?

Winches SA cable reelers are fully custom-built to the client’s cable specification — the cable outer diameter, the capacity and the run length. The wide-flange welded steel drum is sized to take large-diameter cable without tight bends, and the drive is matched to the cable weight and duty.

Are Winches SA cable reelers suitable for underground mining?

Winches SA cable reelers are built for harsh mine environments, rated for wet and dusty conditions with a heavy structural-steel skid frame, epoxy-and-enamel finish and manual override. They are proven on continuous underground dewatering duty at the Pan African MTR gold retreatment operation.

How much does the Pan African MTR plant process?

The Pan African Resources Mogale Tailings Retreatment plant is an R2.5-billion operation processing 800,000 tonnes of tailings per month, targeting 50,000 ounces of gold per year over a 13-year mine life. Winches SA cable reelers support the continuous underground water-extraction circuit.
